Friday, September 20, 2013, Dr. Chris Hickey followed Dr. Eric Dyson in giving his presentation at the Sankofa Education Alliance Annual Harambee Conference in Washington D.C. The focus of his presentation was to explore and share perspectives relevant to the most significant and important questions and considerations that the African-American community needs to consider with respect to preparing for, and taking full advantage of The Affordable Care Act mandate. The presentation was very well received.

Ed, recess/free play and extracurricular activities. Yet, those are the sources of most of the well rounded, innovative graduates business leaders say they desperately need. Math gets creative in 4th grade teacher Lana Gundy’s class when she asks her students write their own brain-teaser math problems. (via Education Week Teacher).
I’ll admit it: I was skeptical of how “creative-thinking” strategies in math would go over with my 4th grade enrichment students. I see these students just once a week in pull-out groups, so every lesson counts. And I was nervous that this one might be a complete disaster.
My students usually solve math problems to practice a specific skill. Then we discuss the different ways they approached the problem, helping them understand the skill more deeply. This lesson, however, called for the students to write their own math problems. How would my students react when I put them in charge of their own learning?
I knew that, if it was successful, this lesson would get right to the heart of Common Core Mathematical Practice Standard #3, helping my students learn to “construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.” READ MORE

Dr. Chris L. Hickey, Sr. is in training this week on California’s version of the Affordable Healthcare Act, Covered California. He is part of a team that will be training Community Outreach and Education groups throughout California.
Day 2 of the Engage Conference: “Unlocking Patient Engagement through Innovation.” This morning’s Keynote is the Honorable Mike Honda, U.S. Congressman, 17th Congressional District of California. His topic is: “Mobile Health and What the Healthcare Industry Must Do to better serve Patients.”
According to an April 2012 Pew report, “… 88% of American adults age 18 and older have a cell phone, 57% have a laptop, 19% own an e-book reader, and 19% have a tablet computer; about six in ten adults (63%) go online wirelessly with one of those devices.”
Entrepreneurs and other innovators struggle to crack our 2.6 trillion dollar health care industry despite near universal agreement that quality and cost of our system lags significantly behind other countries. This panel of business, policy…, and technology experts described atypical market forces that constrained the investment and options for transforming America’s health care system. As a remedy, they shared how the enhanced data liquidity will power the informed-decision making and information technology-enabled business that bring disruption to the marketplace.
“I feel that not only is this a significant issue in this county, it is of particular concern to me how underserved communities will remain relevant and involved in the reshaping of the health information-sharing landscape”, said Dr. Hickey.
The panelists: Dick Foster, Dean, Datapalooza Business School; Farzad Mostashari, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and, Uwe E. Reinhardt, James Madison Professor of Political Economy, Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, Princeton University. The facilitator was, Bryan Sivak, Chief Technology Officer, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Los Angeles, CA – June, 2 2013 – This week Dr. Chris L. Hickey, Sr. attends Datapalooza Conference in Washington DC. During his stay, he has schedule several meetings with key individuals at the Department of Health and Human Services and will gain greater insight into the multiple benefits of the Affordable Care Act. This information and the connections will serve Dr. Hickey’s upcoming Community Awareness Dialogues and simplify the understanding of the Affordable Care Act for underserved communities.
In preparation for the implementation of the Affordable Care Act; Dr. Chris L. Hickey, Sr., Executive Director of Each One-Teach One: Alliance for Academic Access, Achievement and Success - an Educational and Community Awareness nonprofit – is gaining more insight into the multiple benefits of the Affordable Care Act, along with the importance of utilizing the collected health data.
“Clearly, this is an important and relevant issue for our community. We must understand the value and requirements to conduct our own research on our community. We cannot rely on research conducted in other communities to be relevant to our particulars, nor should we rely on others to conduct adequate and relevant research for us. I hope to learn how others are benefiting from the use of “local health data” and construct ways to implement the same in our communities,” said Dr. Hickey.
The Health Data Consortium (HDC), the group organizing Health Datapalooza IV, encourages the creation of a health data “ecosystem” that promotes and accelerates the innovative use of health data. The Consortium is a collaboration among government, non-profit, and private sector organizations working to foster the availability and use of health data to drive innovations that improve health and health care. The Consortium advocates data best practices and information sharing with data providers, and works with businesses, entrepreneurs, and academia to help them understand how to use data to develop new products, services, apps, and research insights.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law in March 2010 and was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year. Among the most sweeping reforms to the healthcare system in U.S. history, the ACA will increase access to healthcare for as many as 30 million Americans and eliminate insurers’ ability to deny people coverage for pre-existing conditions.
Dr. Hickey is leading the charge in disseminating the Affordable Care Act through a series of upcoming Community Awareness Dialogues to be held throughout Southern California. These dialogues: Affordable Care Act: Its Implementation and Our Community, will include health experts and prominent community leaders and will cover key components, requirements, and opportunities, as well as provide attendees an opportunity to ask questions of the panel members.
